"Painting
the buildings and birds was a marvellous experience. The
same view could be painted half a dozen times, and the
colours would be different every time."
"Looking down on the rooftops of Trujillo from the cobbled
track up to the castle was a magical experience, Trujillo
is a town rich in buildings, once grand in concept, but
which have mellowed over the centuries to the unselfconscious
beauty of genteel decay that I find so appealing.
But it is the birds that cannot fail to command your attention
here; they are everywhere in, on and above the buildings.
They are the vital ingredients of the rich confection.
The wealth of towers which adorn the Trujillo roofscapes
are the favourite nesting sites of the storks. Lesser
kestrels, jackdaws, spotless starlings, swallows, house
martins and hoopoes all find nest-sites on ledges, in
crevices under pantiles." |
